I Didn't Build My Gucci Collection With a Collector's Budget. I Built It by Training My Eye.

I learned how to look. I didn’t build my vintage Gucci collection with a collector’s budget. I built it by training my eye. When I first started collecting Gucci, I bought what was accessible to me. I wasn’t competing for the expensive trophy pieces everyone already knew were rare or important. I was simply looking for pieces I found interesting. But the more Gucci I handled, the more my eye changed. I stopped being interested in something simply because it was vintage Gucci. I started looking for the unusual Gucci. The strange construction. The exceptional materials. Suede and leather. Enamel. Unexpected textiles. Unusual hardware. Early ready-to-wear. Bags and garments that didn’t look like everything else on the resale market. The pieces that made me stop scrolling and think: “What is THAT?” Over time, I realized I wasn’t really building a collection of vintage Gucci anymore. I was building a collection of collector Gucci. And eventually, something happened that confirmed I was looking in the right places. Several Gucci pieces I sourced were purchased directly from me by the Gucci Historical Archives. Then there was the jumpsuit. It was an extraordinary 1970s Gucci suede-and-leather jumpsuit with functional gold-tone manual hardware—the kind of Gucci piece most people would never know existed if they hadn't encountered one. I sold that jumpsuit to a private buyer. It changed hands after me and eventually found its way into the Gucci Historical Archives as well. I wasn't the person who sold that particular piece to the Archives. But I was one of the people who recognized what it was before it got there. That distinction means something to me. Because I didn't build this collection by walking into the market and buying objects after somebody else had already established their importance. I learned to recognize the overlooked ones. I learned the materials. The construction. The hardware. The periods. The strange little details that distinguish an interesting old Gucci piece from something genuinely exceptional. And after years of doing that, my collection now contains considerably more collector Gucci than ordinary vintage Gucci. There are still pieces I know immediately. And there are pieces that send me down a research rabbit hole for days. Those are usually my favorites. Because collecting, for me, has never really been about owning the most Gucci. It's about finding the Gucci that makes you stop and ask: “Wait… Gucci made THAT?” That is the Gucci I collect. That is the Gucci I preserve.
